Must Be Nice to Be Rich

What is the person who did the right things supposed to do?  I used to buy CDs.  Yeah the interest rates weren't great compared to my friends who were bragging about their earnings in the stock market, but I never lost money.  Of course then the Fed decided to make interest rates 0 to force me to put my money in the stock market.  Subsequently I've spent hours scouring the NASDAQ for dividends and learning about candlestick charts to try to give me a safe-ish way to invest my money.

Of course during all the time those who have the opportunities to do fancy things I've never heard of nor understand have been making a fortune.  Perhaps if I had all day to manage my investments, I'd be able to do some of these cool things too.  Sadly, I have a job.  I have to work, so I don't have the opportunity to learn about derivatives and who knows what else.   It certainly must be nice to live in a society where the deck is stacked in your favor.

The 500th Reason Why We Have to Solve Health Care Now

There are a ton of reasons why we have to solve health care immediately.  The most important is of course that every second we don't solve it, it becomes more expensive to solve.  Every day of the baby boomer generation that goes by without them contributing more to their retirement and Medicare, the less option we have to defray costs.  I also think that if Disney promoted doing something about it, we might get something done.

However the number one reason that we have to do something now is this:

This is probably our last shot until it is an acute crisis.

Basically if Obama can't get it done now, no one will ever take on this issue again until the crisis is so severe that it will be debilitating.  If we don't do something now, we won't until we can't.  Let's show a little foresight and get this thing done.

A New Horror: Joblessness

Ahh the joys of a jobless recovery.  As promised while those who have nice big 401(k)s are experience an increase in net worth, those of us who, you know, work aren't having such fun.  I'm glad to know that the investment bankers are experiencing portfolio growth, but given a pair of decades in which real wages have risen not a whit, I'm more than a little ready to hear about what we're doing to create jobs.

I'm not big on expanding bureaucracy, but this article on the long term jobless has made me start thinking that we might need more "make work" jobs until the economy really gets going again.  I watch the liberal media, but I'm a believer in the free market.  That being said, I don't want to see a generation that doesn't know how to work, or doesn't believe that they can.  I'm ready for a jobs bill.  We probably should have done it in with stimulus.

Health Care Shambles

As we've watched the possibilities for meaningful healthcare reform dim, I'm left wondering:  Why can't we go back to the drawing board?  The Senate supermajority is gone.  Health care is already viewed as a lost cause and the country seems to be saying, we want you to do something about jobs, not health care.  While I think we should do something about both, I think it's fine to get real reform, rather than a bill that doesn't address cost.

Speaking of cost, I think this is where the democrats lose an opportunity to get the republicans on board.  If they actually addressed issues the republicans care about, which do have some merit occassionally, we could get a good bill, instead of this shambles.  I found this proposal, which seems perfectly reasonable to me and might get some cost-hawks on board.  (Source)  Why can't we do something like this that helps everyone get the care they deserve, but throw the republicans a bone.

Theme Parks by State

I'm not sure if the site is still under construction or what, but if they just add Disneyland in California, they've got all the ones I care about:

The Horror

So here is my horrifying situation for the day:

  • I have a very important account.
  • I am currently logged into this account and can use it.
  • I have no idea what the password is for this account and have intentionally left no way to recover it.

So basically I have until the cookie runs out on that login -- At which point I will never be able to use this account again.  I'm hoping that if I go to sleep thinking about it I will wake up and remember the password.
